FBR Has Failed to Resolve Rs. 3.76 Trillion in Pending Tax Cases So Far
Tax cases worth Rs. 3.76 trillion remain pending across the Supreme Court, High Courts, and Appellate Tribunals, sources from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) told ProPakistani. FBR is struggling to recover these funds, with the volume of cases increasing significantly in recent years. Pending cases in Appellate Tribunals alone have surged from Rs. 1.46 trillion to Rs. 2.235 trillion. Till June 2024, Rs. 105 billion is stuck in 3,450 cases pending before the Supreme Court. The Islamabad High Court has 780 tax cases worth Rs. 160 billion awaiting resolution, while the Sindh High Court has yet to resolve cases worth Rs. 390 billion. The Lahore High Court hasn’t delivered its rulings on 4,670 tax cases worth over Rs. 180 billion. In the Peshawar High Court, 400 cases involving Rs. 8 billion are pending, while the Balochistan High Court has 23 cases. Altogether, nearly 9,500 tax cases involving Rs. 750 billion are stuck in various courts. Meanwhile, there are 71,300 cases worth Rs. 2.23 trillion awaiting resolution at Appellate Tribunals, FBR sources added. It bears mentioning that the International Monetary Fund has urged FBR to expedite the resolution of these tax cases.
