The government is considering imposing a federal excise duty (FED) of Rs 3-4 per kilogram on sugar, sources told ProPakistani.
Sources said proposals to amend the sales tax mechanism on sugar including the fixed sales tax have been sent to the Prime Minister for review.
If implemented, the FED would directly impact consumers purchasing sugar.
However, according to Minister of State for Finance Ali Pervez, no immediate decision has been made to impose the tax. The final decision rests with the Prime Minister’s Office, and the proposed taxation measures are likely to be changed.
