Housing Ministry to Change Allotment Rules for Govt Employees
The Ministry of Housing and Works is preparing to amend government accommodation allocation rules to benefit federal government employees. According to sources in the Ministry, a proposed amendment to the Allocation Rules, 2002 is under consideration and will be implemented soon. The Ministry intends to eliminate Rule 20 of the Government House Allotment, which currently permits a government house allocated to a retired federal employee to be transferred to their employed son or daughter. Sources indicate that employees on the waiting list believe this rule is unjust, as it allows a government house to be transferred from parent to child upon retirement, depriving senior employees who have been waiting for a long time. They noted that officers and employees often arrange for their children to be recruited before retirement, securing the house for them. Affected employees are calling for house allotments to be based solely on seniority. To address this issue, the Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Works has formed a committee to review the rules, and it has recommended scrapping Rule 20. However, the Ministry will seek opinions from the Establishment Division and the Ministry of Law and Justice before making any final decisions.
