LESCO Faces Severe Solar Meter Shortage
Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) is facing a severe crisis as the procurement of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) smart meters has stalled, resulting in an unofficial suspension of solar connections. Although LESCO issued directives to start releasing demand notices for AMI smart meters from November 15, no such notices have been issued to date. Additionally, the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for green meters has also come to a halt since the specified date. Initially, LESCO had announced plans to provide NOCs for green meters. However, starting November 15, the issuance of NOCs for bi-directional green meters was restricted. To address the gap, LESCO intended to supply bi-directional smart meters to consumers. Unfortunately, delays in the procurement process by the Material Management department have hindered progress. The failure to acquire smart meters on time has disrupted the installation of solar system connections, leaving consumers uncertain. The setback impacts consumers seeking to connect their solar systems and raises concerns about the company’s ability to meet its renewable energy goals.
