Our Land, Our Future: Unity Foods’ Commitment to Sustainability
As the world faces the ever-growing challenges of climate change, the need for working towards sustainability has never been more urgent. Now, more than ever before, businesses are realizing their profound responsibility to protect the planet not only for future generations but for their own very survival. With this shared purpose, brands are stepping up to not only invest in sustainable practices but to be part of the collective solution that ensures a healthier, more hopeful future for all. This year’s theme for the World Sustainability Day is “Our Land, Our Future.” We are #GenerationRestoration, highlights the urgent need to restore ecosystems for future generations. At Unity Foods Limited (UFL), sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s the heart of everything they do. The company is proud to contribute to the global sustainability movement, championing initiatives aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From transforming agriculture to embracing clean energy, empowering communities, and reducing their environmental footprint, they are paving the way for a better tomorrow for everyone. At the forefront of their sustainability agenda lies the Ba Ikhtiyar Kissan project, a transformative initiative empowering 500 farmers with advanced agricultural techniques. By promoting sustainable practices, they are helping farmers increase productivity while protecting natural resources, nurturing a future where agriculture and the environment flourish in harmony. UFL is committed to achieving Net Zero by 2050. This ambitious goal reflects their deep resolve to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change. By investing in sustainable technologies and energy solutions, they are taking bold steps toward securing a cleaner, greener planet. Renewable energy is a vital part of their journey. UFL has already installed 1.74 MW of solar panels, with 3.3 MW more in the pipeline. This transition not only reduces their dependence on fossil fuels but also reflects their commitment to cleaner energy, driving positive change across the industry. As part of their journey toward energy sustainability, they are shifting to biomass for their steam boilers. By replacing fossil fuels with eco-friendly alternatives, UFL is lowering its carbon footprint and promoting innovative energy solutions. Recognizing the global water crisis, UFL has installed four Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants at its facilities, ensuring sustainable water usage. Through these efforts, they aim to conserve water and reduce waste, taking a crucial step toward environmental preservation for future generations. Their tree plantation initiative commits to planting 10,000 trees by 2040, contributing to cleaner air, reduced carbon emissions, and healthier ecosystems. Every tree they plant brings them closer to a thriving, biodiverse future, reinforcing their promise to protect the planet. In their pursuit of sustainability, they believe in uplifting the underserved. UFL has donated PKR 35 million, ensuring medical care for over 50,000 underprivileged patients. Through healthcare support and community development, they are fostering a fairer, more equitable society. Their Plastic Waste Management initiative focuses on recycling plastic packaging waste, promoting a circular economy within their supply chain. By transforming waste into valuable resources, they are actively tackling the environmental challenges of plastic pollution. At UFL, sustainability begins with their people. Their employees participate in regular beach clean-up drives, addressing plastic pollution and raising awareness about the importance of marine conservation. These hands-on efforts reflect their belief that every small step makes a big difference. They are committed to breaking the cycle of poverty through education. UFL proudly sponsors 200 students at The School of Karachi in the Gaghar Phatak slums, empowering young minds with the tools they need to build a better tomorrow. By investing in education, they are sowing the seeds of long-term societal growth. Unity Foods’ journey toward #GenerationRestoration stands committed to restoring ecosystems, empowering communities, and reducing their environmental footprint. On this World Sustainability Day, they align with the theme, “Our Land, Our Future,” knowing that every step they take today shapes a better tomorrow. Together, they are #GenerationRestoration—leading the way toward a sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous future for all. This article is written by Nageen Rizvi.
