Pak-Afghan Transit Trade Plunges by 59% in FY24
Transit trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan saw a big drop during the financial year 2023-24. The federal government’s measures to curb smuggling at transit corridors have led to a big decline in Afghan imports from Pakistan. In FY24, Afghan transit trade fell by 59 percent or $4.21 billion. During the period in review, the volume of Afghan transit trade was $2.89 billion, down from $7.95 billion in FY23. The decline continued into the first month of the new fiscal year, with July 2024 seeing an 83 percent year-on-year drop in trade, falling to just $9.8 million from $583 million in July 2023.
