The Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production was informed on Wednesday that Pakistani automakers are producing export-quality cars.
The committee meeting chaired by Senator Aon Abbas was briefed by officials from the Engineering Development Board (EDB). Responding to questions, the official informed the committee that cars being produced in Pakistan are as per international standards.
The committee was further informed that there are only two locally manufactured cars that do not have airbags.
Speaking during the meeting, Federal Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain said that up to 65 percent parts of locally assembled cars are manufactured in Pakistan.
However, the minister said that due to high prices, it is difficult to export cars being assembled in Pakistan. Saleem Mandviwalla echoed similar views and said that the production cost of local cars is on the higher side.
The committee also directed to provide details of the Electric Vehicles Policy.
