Pakistan has assured the International Monetary Fund technical mission that the Auditor General of Pakistan will submit a report to the Fund within a week on the special audit of supplementary grants.
Sources told ProPakistani that IMF technical mission officials on Thursday met with officials of the Controller General Accounts, and the Fund team will meet the Auditor General of Pakistan on Friday also.
The IMF in 2024 directed Pakistan to conduct a special audit of supplementary grants issued in the last ten years; however, the Pakistani side failed to conduct the audit in Fiscal Year 2024-25.
Sources disclosed that over the past ten years, the federal government issued supplementary grants exceeding Rs. 2 trillion, reflecting a substantial rise in such allocations in recent years. The IMF has expressed concern over the growing volume and weak oversight of these grants, which are meant to cover unbudgeted expenditures during a fiscal year.
Under Article 84 of the Constitution of Pakistan, the federal government is empowered to issue supplementary grants; however, all such grants released up to May 15 each year must subsequently be approved by Parliament.
The IMF considers the special audit of these grants essential for ensuring transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline in Pakistan’s public expenditure system.
It is pertinent to note that the IMF technical mission started its tour of Pakistan from November 11, 2025, to discuss Pakistan’s budget framework, and it will conclude its visit on November 21, 2025.
