The Punjab Government has sanctioned an allocation of Rs. 3.433 billion for establishing Model Bazaars in 13 cities, aimed at providing essential goods at below-market rates and fostering a secure platform for small businesses.
Currently, 36 Model Bazaars operate in 24 districts, including ten in Lahore, offering a clean and organized shopping environment with daily essentials often priced below notified rates.
Model Bazaars have become more than just marketplaces; they are centers for small entrepreneurs. With a minimal investment of Rs. 10,000, aspiring business owners can set up stalls with free electricity, parking, security, and sanitation, all at a nominal monthly rent averaging Rs. 7,500. This supportive infrastructure has made Model Bazaars a sought-after opportunity for those looking to start or expand their businesses.
Originally, the Punjab Model Bazaars Management Company (PMBMC) requested Rs. 2.5 billion for ten cities. Following a thorough business model review, the proposal was expanded to 13 cities, resulting in an increased allocation of Rs. 3.433 billion.
The cities earmarked for these new Model Bazaars include:
The Planning & Development Board has approved the proposal, and Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has desired a summary for the CM that the case be placed before the Provincial Cabinet for final approval, ensuring funds are released promptly to meet the construction timeline.
Naveed Rafaqat Ahmad, CEO of PMBMC, commented that the decision is a “major milestone and a turning point” that underscores the government’s trust in PMBMC’s ability to execute large-scale welfare projects. Ahmad acknowledged Chairman Muhammad Afzal Khokhar, MNA, for his instrumental role in securing government support, adding that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s directive to establish bazaars in underserved districts shows her dedication to public welfare.
Ahmad further added that the Board of Revenue (BOR) has already transferred the required land for these bazaars at no cost, expediting the process. If funds are released on schedule, these bazaars are projected to be fully operational by June 2025.
Once launched, these Model Bazaars will offer essentials at prices below the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) rates, delivering much-needed economic relief amid rising inflation. This initiative will enhance public access to affordable goods, providing a vital resource for both urban and rural communities.
This ambitious expansion of Model Bazaars is a testament to PMBMC’s mission of providing sustainable public services without burdening the government budget. With Rs. 3.433 billion approved, Punjab moves closer to ensuring accessible, affordable essentials for its citizens, marking a significant step in advancing public welfare.
